Green Communities Guidelines

Green Communities is transforming the way America thinks about, designs and builds affordable communities. Green building integrates materials and methods that promote environmental quality, economic vitality and social benefits through design, construction and operation of the built environment. Green Communities aligns affordable housing investment strategies with environmentally responsive building practices.

The 2008 version of the Green Communities Criteria is purposefully aligned with the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's Rating System for Homes. The Green Communities Criteria were developed specifically for developers of all types of affordable housing to be a rigorous yet holistic approach to deliver housing that will provide significant health, economic and environmental benefits.
