The total amount of wastes we have diverted from landfills over the last five years is equivalent to 100,000 cars which at an average length of 18 feet, placed bumper-to-bumper, would stretch over 342 miles - greater than the width of Arkansas.
In total, American Olean's corporate office has recycled more than 340 tons of cardboard and office paper since 2003.
More than 300 million gallons of wastewater has been recycled over the past six years - enough to fill 454 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Our combined efforts in Natural Gas and Electricity Conservation have reduced usage amounts equal to what it would take to provide natural gas to over 2,000 homes and electricity to over 750 homes for an entire year.
American Olean stands for beautiful design in every way possible. Because we believe the best design includes consideration for the environment, we've introduced Greenworks™, a belief that we can help create beautiful designs in ways that may also reduce environmental impact. American Olean Greenworks is more than just a compilation of our sustainability programs - it's a company-wide philosophy, a commitment to help contribute to the design of your sustainable projects, without compromising your artistic vision.
Commitment to Using Recycled Materials in Our Products
Post-Consumer: Select floor tiles contain over 17% post-consumer recycled materials. Pre-Consumer: Over 98% of our manufactured products contain qualifying recycled materials, minimizing the use of raw materials to the greatest extent possible.
Wastes Diverted From Landfills
Since we use so many of nature's materials in our products, it's no wonder one of our most important changes is our dedication to help prevent adding solid wastes to landfills. The total amount of wastes diverted from landfills over the last five years as a result of our process operations is over 1.3 billion pounds. That is 250 million pounds every year.
We accomplished this through three different practices:
EXAMPLE: One of the major components of our floor tile products is a byproduct of a process that makes roofing materials. Since this byproduct was formerly disposed of as waste, it means American Olean has helped prevent, on average, more than 175 million pounds per year from ending up in our nation's landfills.
Over 65 million pounds each year of Fired Tile Wastes that cannot be used to make new tile products are recycled in state-approved Beneficial Reuse Products.
Secure recycling is accomplished by confidential shredding of all paper products – eligible archived records are currently being shredded and recycled.
Water is one of the most important resources on earth and it should be treated that way. Annually, American Olean recovers and reuses more than 90 million gallons of process wastewater. Today, five of our plants recycle and reuse 100% of wastewater generated during manufacturing. Our most current project involves working toward our goal of zero discharge of process wastewater from any of our manufacturing facilities.
Naturally, one of the most effective ways for us to contribute to the environment is through the conservation of energy. By reevaluating and reengineering some of our operating procedures, we've dramatically reduced our energy consumption.
Our multiple manufacturing facilities in the United States and Mexico give us the opportunity to be closer to more projects than anyone. Raw materials are sourced regionally to the maximum extent possible resulting in conservation of fossil fuels required for transportation.
Our holistic approach to conservation doesn't end with our products. In order to further our commitment to conserving nature, it's important to bring those values into our workplace as well. Changes we've made to air conditioning systems, lighting and office occupancy sensors in our offices and plants have led to a savings of more than 11 million kilowatts of electricity per year. That is equivalent to over 400 homes for an entire year
