Large Format Tiles

Keep Your Large Format Tile Looking Great with the Right Installation Methods

Large-format tile (15 inches and larger) requires different subflooring, trowel selection, grout joint sizing, and mortar coverage than smaller tiles. Follow these requirements and you'll decrease the risk of having problems with your tile down the road.

  • Ensure a level substrate before installation. Surfaces that are not level become more pronounced when large-format tile is installed.
  • Large tiles require 90% mortar contact with the floor; back buttering mortar onto the tile helps to ensure good bonding
  • Adhere to grout joint recommendations for the tile series you select
  • Follow published installation instructions from the manufacturer concerning setting materials and tools for proper installation
  • Medium bed mortar is required for tile with dimensional length greater than 15 inches on any side of the tile
